[ProgSoc] nfs and locks

hey...

I have a situation where certain gnome apps cannot run because gconfd
cannot create locks; this arises b/c /home is a nfs mount. lockd appears
to be running on the client machine, and the server is running the
userspace nfs server on debian/woody (the client is also woody)

any ideas? how do nfs locks work? are they co-operative? r they just
ordinary files with the PID of the proc in them?

The log msg I get from gconfd is:
Nov 8 12:24:19 packer gconfd (vik-15599): Failed to get lock for
daemon, exiting: Failed to create or open '/home/vik/.gconfd/lock/ior'

cheers

vik
