nah, I figured it out...

I had the classpath set with dodgey windows paths ... i.e.
"C:\PROGRA~1\etc.etc.

rather than the whole thing, + case sensitive shtuff...

The JVM doesn't seem phased by the dodgey classpath, but the compiler cracks
the sads
