Thread-Topic: Linux 7.1 startup hangs

I have installed Linux 7.1 on a Compaq Presario 2286 box. It has 256 MB of RAM. The problem is that when I boot the machine, the system gets stuck while starting kswapd v1.8. The message on the screen is as follows :

apm:BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver Version 1.14)
Starting kswapd v1.8


Any advice to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
